Abstract
A China pink (Caryophyllaceae) is a flower all Korean people are very familiar with. Korean poets have long composed poems on the China pink. Seeing this small and cute flower by the roadside and in the noiseless forest, they found simple and natural beauty. They praised the virtue of this flower which endured through autumn winds. Chinese people also loved this beautiful flower. Chinese poets praised the life force that kept it alive during the cool autumn months. But they described it as a flower embroidered on clothes of a belle, and often referred to Utopia and a shining glow imagining the China pink blooming there. From this perspective, I think, Chinese people directed their attention to its sexy shape and attractive scent more than its chasteness and friendliness. Historically, many poets in Korea have been profoundly impressed by the geniality of this flower. They projected their loneliness onto the China pink, and sought deep consolation through it. Korean people have loved its natural beauty and fragrance. A hermit, such as an old farmer, often had a feeling of intimacy for it. Some people also loved its simplicity and silence, and praised its strength for withstanding the cold. Korean people have many various and peculiar images of the China pink in their minds. Korean poems written in classical Chinese, on the subject of the China pink, have influenced on modern Korean poems.
