이 글은 지도그리기(mapping)를 활용한 문학연구의 방법을 제시하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 기존의 문학지리가 어떠한 방식으로 지도를 활용하는지 일람하고, 최근의 디지털 환경이 가져온 문학지도의 변화를 살펴보았다. 기존의 문학지도들은 대체로 텍스트의 지리정보를 저장하는 시각적 데이터베이스의 형태를 취한다. 이것은 대개의 문학지도가 문학 작품과 작가들의 문화적 기억의 계승을 목표로 하기 때문이다. 그리고 디지털 환경은 이러한 아카이브 구축을 효율적으로 개량하고 있다. 한편 문학지도의 제작을 통한 문학 작품의 비평적 독해는 제한적으로 이루어졌다. 이는 지도 위에 대량적인 정보를 표시하는 작업이 비평가의 개성을 반영하지 못했기 때문이다. 즉 지도제작자의 ‘해석’은 대체로 글쓰기를 통해 이루어졌다. 이는 비평적 실천에 있어 ‘지도’를 보조적인 역할로 축소시켰다. 이 글은 문학의 지도그리기가 문학적 정보들을 충실히 저장하면서도, 그것이 비평적인 효용을 갖출 수 있도록 ‘문학의 시각화’의 방법을 제안했다. 다시 말해, 텍스트 내에 존재하는 지리적 요소들이 가지고 있는 구성원리와 상호적 관계들을 보임으로써, 문학작품의 사회적․문화적․서사적 맥락을 가시화하는 전략을 제안했다. 이를 통해 문학의 지도그리기가 사실들의 데이터베이스에 기초하여, 텍스트를 이해하는 용이한 도구로 활용될 수 있는 방법을 탐구하였다.
Abstract
This article aims to suggest methods of literary study that using map drawing. For this purpose, this study explored how the existing literary geography uses maps including GIS. Literary maps are mostly visual databases that store the geographic information of literary texts. This is because, most literary maps are drawn to inherit the cultural memories of literary works and authors. Then, the recent progress of digital environment is improving these archiving efficiently. Meanwhile, critical reading through the literary mapping were limited. This is because that displaying large volumes of information on the map does not reflect the ideas of the critic. In other words, the critical minds express itself not with maps but words. What this study suggests is the ‘visualizing literature’ which play both roles storing informations and critically efficient. In other words, by displaying the principles and interrelationships of the existing elements in the text, it visualizes the social, cultural, narrative contexts of literature. Through this, the method of map making was explored which helps to understand the meaning of texts based on the database.
