하룬 파로키의 작품들은 주제와 매체 및 대상의 다채로운 독창성으로 인해 단순한 요약을 뛰어넘는 면모를 지녔지만, 그 가운데에서도 기본적 바탕으로서의 방법론이 인지된다. 본 논문은 ‘비교’와 ‘결합’을 통한 ‘이야기하기’를 파로키의 작품 세계의 바탕으로 작용하는 인식과 표현의 방법론으로서 고찰한다. 이야기하기란 파로키 특유의 이미지를 통한 사유의 흐름을 가리키는 것으로, 파로키는 ‘이미지’와 ‘사유’ 그리고 ‘이야기’ 간의 경계를 허물며 그 각각의 개념들을 새롭게 정의하고 확장한다고 볼 수 있다. 파로키는 영상 이미지로 어떻게 사유하고 이야기하는가? 그의 작품들에서는 이미지들이 어떻게 서로 대화하며 이야기를 가져오는가? 이 논문은 파로키의 에세이영화에서 비디오 설치작품까지 다양한 작품들을 중심으로, 파로키의 에세이적 이미지 사유의 방법론인 ‘비교’와 ‘결합’을 통한 ‘이야기하기’를 탐구한다. 파로키에게 비교와 결합은 사유의 방식이자 주제로서의 인식의 방법이다. 파로키에게 이야기하기란 이미지 자료를 가지고 펼치는 아카이브적 사유이지만, 다른 한편으로 그것이 바탕을 이룬 상상에 가 닿는다. 하룬 파로키는 영상을 통해 삶과 세계를 보는 방법을 이야기하고 교육한다.
Abstract
Harun Farocki’s works comprise a vast and original oeuvre with various themes and media. This essay attempts to investigate the methodology that can explain Harun Farocki’s works and thoughts. The investigation is about the way of Telling(Erzählen) through Comparison(Vergleich) and Combination(Verbund) in Farocki’s essay films and video installation works. The way of telling through comparison and combination is, for Farocki, theme per se. Farocki’s Telling is on one hand, archival thinking with image-materials, but meets on the other hand, imaginative thinking based on archival thinking. Harun Farocki tells and instructs how to observe and think with video images which are compared and combined like image-books. From this, Harun Farocki can be regarded as an intermedial media artist who has told his thoughts through the comparison and combination of media.
