Abstract

Since online platforms are a new economic and social phenomenon that drives the digital economy, various regulations are being made to regulate this new phenomenon. However, the regulatory design is biased toward side effects without accurately understanding the advantages and disadvantages of the online platform. Recently, a self-regulatory model has been proposed to overcome this problem, but there is insufficient data on how platform users evaluate the platform and how self-regulatory efforts are being made in actual industrial settings. In recognition of such a problem, this study analyzed the operating conditions of the platform, self-regulation, and related issues through an in-depth survey on delivery apps and open markets through a survey of 510 delivery app users and 500 open market users. As a result of data analysis, it was found that multi-homing has become a common phenomenon, and the platform is contributing significantly to the increase in sales. However, delivery apps and open markets showed differences in reasons and patterns of unfair practices and consumer disputes. Based on the analysis, this study suggests that (1) it is necessary to examine the positive and negative aspects of the platform in a balanced way from a macroscopic point of view, (2) it is necessary to avoid uniform regulation in consideration of the different characteristics of various platforms, (3) it is necessary to induce self-cleaning action at the industry level and the derivation of agreed guidelines. For future research, it is suggested that the collection and analysis of multi-dimensional data reflecting the general consumer's perspective is necessary.
