Abstract
This study aims to explore the multiple mediating effects of self-regulation and emotion regulation on the relation between the perceived faculty-student relationship and student adaptation to college. Data was collected from 287 college students using a self-report questionnaire. A descriptive statistic analysis, correlation analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis were conducted. In addition, the procedure suggested by Preacher and Hayes was used to test multiple and simple mediation analyses using the SPSS Macro. The study findings were as follows: First, the perceived faculty-student relationship was a significant predictor of self-regulation and emotion regulation. Second, the perceived faculty-student relationship, self-regulation, and emotion regulation significantly predicted students' college adaptation. Third, both self-regulation and emotion regulation mediated the relationship between the perceived faculty-student relationship and academic adjustment. Finally, emotion regulation mediated the relationship between the perceived faculty-student relationship and social adjustment, personal-emotional adjustment, institutional attachment. These results confirmed that a stable relationship between professors and students is important to promote student adaptation to college. More specifically, it is essential to help learners develop emotion regulation, which is the ability to understand and regulate their own emotions.
