Abstract
This paper focuses on the ideas and activities of Frances Wright, who dreamed of a utopian community without slaves in America. For her, America was a country of freedom. But slavery was an irrational system that contradicted the principles of American democracy. The 'Nashoba' experiment started from this background. She was a follower of Robert Owen. After visiting his New Harmony, she envisioned her own utopia and founded the Nashoba in Tennessee in November 1825. I searched for the points which Wright confronted and collided with American mainstream discourses through this experiment. Although the Nashoba community ended in failure, insightful observations and diagnoses of the American society that was looked into through the eyes of others provide a useful historical case for understanding the United States and England in the early 19th century. In conclusion, this experiment was not only an important intermediary that led to a change from admiration and praise of Wright toward American society to criticism and resistance, but also a unique experiment among American utopian experiments in the early 19th century.
