Abstract

This paper analyzes Jang Jung-il’s debut short story collection When Adam Opens His Eyes (1990) within the historical context of Korean literature in the 1990s, focusing on the construction of a unique form of subjectivity and narrative. It argues that the emergence of the character “Adam” departs from the conventional framework of the Bildungsroman, while strategically appropriating its structure. Through Adam’s repeated “awakenings,” the narrative reveals that his subjectivity is not formed through inner growth or moral maturation, but through his circulation as a given signifier within the network of sexual exchange and the economy of desire. Adam’s actions are shaped not by autonomous agency, but by contingent moments of contract and exchange, outlining a form of “(anti-)Bildungsroman.” This study further emphasizes that the “everything” Adam desires cannot be reduced to the logic of capitalist desire, and instead gestures toward another plane of economic logic grounded in masochistic affect and the ethics of new relational contracts. In this light, When Adam Opens His Eyes surfaces the structures of desire and governmentality that undergird 1990s literature, and may be read as a text that unsettles dominant literary norms by presenting a mode of anti-subjective writing.
