A Corpus-Based Comparative Analysis on Lexical Bundles in English Subtitles of Korean Films and American Film Scripts

This paper examines the frequency and the structural and functional characteristics of lexical bundles drawn from English subtitles of Korean films and compares lexical bundles of subtitles to those of movie scripts and of general written English. For this purpose, English Subtitles of Korean Film Corpus (ESKFC) and American Film Scripts Corpus (AFSC) were compiled, and American General Written English Corpus (AME06) was utilized. A total of 886, 861, and 162 lexical bundles were extracted from ESKFC, AFSC, and AME06 respectively. The top 100 bundles out of each corpus were analyzed; four common bundles were observed across three corpora and 38 common bundles were found between ESKFC and AFSC. This study showed important characteristics of lexical bundles of movie discourse and revealed interesting associations between structure and function.
