Abstract

Chuimisamseonnok, based on Okhwangibong, can be the center of attention in that it shows countermeasures of women from their own consciousness. Also, it is related to Hanjosamseonggibong which completely reorganized Okhwangibong from the women's side. Thus, Chuimisamseonnok is situated between Okhwangibong and Hanjosamseonggibong. Chuimisamseonnok presents various means for women to cope with their bad husbands and examines the possibility of realizing them. They are categorized into three ways. First, women try to reform men and make them penitent. It is the best solution for the couples who have trouble keeping their relationships. This method, however, exacts absolute consideration and sacrifice from women and still remains as a problem. Therefore, the author suggests the second way for women to live independently from their husbands. It means that women should live freely in their own places getting out of their husbands. Still, it is actually impossible for women to live alone in their own places. Finally, the author makes men understand women. It is embodied in the story that Gwangmuje, turning into a woman in his dream, lives a same life of Gwakhu abandoned by him and eventually understand her. Accordingly, it is men's understanding that the author emphasizes in solving the problems between couples. In this way, Chuimisamseonnok focuses on the problems between couples from women's viewpoints and finds solutions. This is a significant novel that spoke for women late in the 18th century when classical novels were at their ripe maturity.
