Abstract

This study examines the generic (im)possibility of SF poetry by focusing on the emergence of science-fictional imagination that has recently appeared as a symptomatic tendency in contemporary Korean poetry. SF has long been regarded as a genre specific to fiction, and critical discussions surrounding it have likewise been shaped mainly within the realm of the novel. However, since the 2000s, certain Korean poems have begun to present imaginations of dystopia, futuristic technologies, cyborgs, and cloned beings—forms of imagination that are unmistakably science-fictional. These imaginations are not consumed as mere entertainment or fragmented motifs; rather, they operate through an internal poetic logic grounded in the speculative framework of SF. This increasingly visible poetic tendency suggests a new possibility for poetic imagination, revealing that SF in contemporary Korean poetry functions not as a borrowed motif but as an appropriated form that constructs its own terrain. Nevertheless, because SF is still predominantly understood as a novelistic genre, science-fictional imagination in Korean poetry has often been undervalued, dismissed as either a minor experiment or a peripheral aesthetic gesture. In response, this paper proposes a theoretical framework for SF poetry, moving beyond the view that SF imagination in Korean poetry merely represents an experimental tendency. Crossing the conventional boundaries of genre, SF poetry performs the ethical function of SF as a site of speculative inquiry, while also opening itself toward the world as an entirely receptive medium that invites new modes of sensibility and thought. To consider the generic (im)possibility of SF poetry is thus to examine how contemporary Korean poetry perceives the present moment (here and now) and how it renews both its poetic form and its conception of the world. The sensorial and ethical landscape shaped by SF poetry provides a significant critical standpoint from which to explore how Korean poetry envisions, interprets, and reconstructs the contemporary world.
