초록
This paper attempts to investigate the literary style of Of Reformation in its relationship with the newly emerging public readership that consumed pamphlet literature. Considering that polemicists in the 1640s perceived the reading public as a whole and sought to merge the elite audience with the popular audience, studying the literary style of Of Reformation in relation to the popular audience opens a new way for its affective element to be read as an effective means of eliciting a wider audience’s support in establishing a new church governance system. This paper argues that Milton manipulates the affective elements of long sentences through the combination of body imagery and millennial vision, allowing readers to make careful judgments about the harmfulness of episcopacy through a new level of relationships with episcopacy in the realm of emotion evoked by images such as sickness, destructiveness, and contagiousness.
