초록
This paper aims to explore the ways in which Milton utilizes Saint Paul’s teachings and literary style in his creation of plain aesthetics designed to persuade his target readership of A Treatise of Civil Power in Ecclesiastical Causes: Shewing That It Is Not Lawful for Any Power on Earth to Compel in Matters of Religion (1659). By investigating Milton’s concise aesthetics in terms of his use of the Pauline style, the paper argues that Milton, beyond upholding religious freedom, endeavors to cultivate readers capable of their own interpretive independence despite external pressure. In doing so, Milton fashions the revolutionary reader as a judge, and nurtures a self-governable reader, who can resist the Cromwellian regime’s reactionary drives without surrendering to external, oppressive forces or laws, using their rational faculties and their faith-centered perspectives.
