초록

This essay contributes to recent scholarly efforts to recuperate evidence of early modern women’s book ownership by reconstructing the reading of Lady Margaret Hoby (1571-1633) on the basis of records in the diary she kept from 1599-1605. The essay includes an edited list of all references Hoby makes to specific books, manuscript as well as print. This list comprises the most up-to-date record of Hoby’s reading: several of the identifications here are entirely new, and many correct previous identifications. An introduction “unpacks” Hoby’s library as recorded in her diary, and notes that while her reading is largely theological, it also engaged with works of religious radicalism that addressed the period’s central doctrinal and ecclesiological debates. Many scholars have discussed Hoby’s reading as designed primarily to cultivate spiritual interiority and a pious identity. But the books identified here reveal her as actively engaged in the radical religio-political issues of her time.
