Abstract
This study examined how teacher collaboration supports novice teachers in designing science lessons based on socioscientific issues (SSI) and identified the key characteristics of such collaborative processes. Therefore, a teacher learning community was formed with two elementary school teachers with no experience in SSI instruction. Through collaborative sessions, the community designed and implemented SSI-based lessons, and the participants’ instructional design processes were examined through qualitative analysis. Notably, interactions grounded in collaboration primarily facilitated SSI lesson design and three prominent interaction patterns emerged. First, teachers collaborated to share challenges encountered during the SSI lesson design and generated ideas for resolving them. The researcher and participants overcame individual concerns and difficulties throughout the design process. Second, the collaboration fostered “designing with attention to the essential characteristics of SSI,” thereby enhancing the pedagogical depth of the lessons. Third, “positive interactions and emotional exchanges based on empathy, praise, and encouragement” provided emotional support, enabling participants to persist with this unfamiliar instructional approach and complete the lesson design and research process. These findings proposed practical strategies for supporting novice and SSI-inexperienced elementary teachers in implementing SSI-based science education.
