맥루한 매체이론에서 인간의 위치: ‘기술 우선성’에 대한 논의를 중심으로

맥루한의 주장은 일반적으로 매체에 강조의 방점을 둔 것으로 매체가 인간사에 도입하는 모든 변화와 변형의 일차적이자 궁극적인 원인을 기술이나 매체에서 찾는다고 말해지고 있다. 그러나 맥루한의 주장에서 기술에 대한 강조의 정도는 다른 한편으로 그의 매체이론에서 인간이 차지하는 위치를 가늠해 볼 수 있는 중요한 지점이다. 이 논문은 새논과 위버의 <커뮤니케이션의 수학적 이론>과 키틀러의 기술에 대한 논의와 맥루한의 주장을 비교, 검토하고 맥루한의 기술에 대한 입장을 기술결정론이 아닌 ‘기술 우선성’의 논리로 개념화했다. 현재 기술 상황에서 인간의 위치는 새로운 개념인 포스트휴먼으로 전환되었음을 받아들이거나 최소한 기술의 우선성이 인간의 주체성을 훨씬 압도하는 상황으로 전환되었으며, 인간의 위치는 기술의 대척점이 아닌 기술에 스며든 상태라고 할 수 있다. 컴퓨터 네트워크를 통한 인간의 무한 자유를 은유하는 지금의 미디어 상황은 일종의 최면 상태이다. 이를 바라보는 하나의 길잡이로 맥루한 철학이 제시하는 기술의 우선성은 다시 한 번 적극 검토되어야 한다.
Abstract
In his study on media, McLuhan insists that the first or fundamental cause for the changes and transformation in society and human perception is media. To McLuhan, it is the medium or technology that introduces the change of scale or pace or pattern of human affairs. His notion of technology let us know the meaning or message of technology and, at the same time, the position of human in this technological milieu. This study explores Shannon & Weaver's 'The mathematical theory of communication', Friedrich Kittler's 'media materialism' with comparison to McLuhan's media theory. McLuhan's notion of 'media as the extension of man' can be re-interpreted as 'technology as extended body and as 'human as an embodied technology' in this digitally transformed technological milieu. Based on the notion of 'the priority of technology-technology can be regarded as the cause or fundamental factor in the whole process of communication and human affairs,' human seems to loose the power to say the technology is the extension of him/herself. Rather, human can be served as a part or process of technology: as an embodied technology. McLuhan's media theory suggests that the metaphor of 'the limitless freedom' in the computerized digital technological society could be the sheer hallucination of human being-the embodied technology.
