포스트휴먼 논의에서 인공지능, 바이오 기술, 정보기술은 인간의 본질을 벗어나 새로운 혁명이 올 것이라는 장밋빛 미래를 제시한다. 동시에 혹자는 반성 없는 인간중심주의를 탈피하지 않고는 기술에 의한 인간 지배가 심화할 것이라고 예언한다. 이런 시대에 미디어 논의는 인간과 기술에 대한 관계를 다시 돌아볼 필요가 있으며 이런 논의의 시작점을 마셜 매클루언(Herbert Marshall McLuhan), 자크 엘룰(Jacques Ellul), 닐 포스트먼(Neil Postman) 등이 제시한 미디어 생태학 관점으로 삼고자 한다. 그들은 미디어가 인간 지각의 확장이 며, 미디어는 단순한 기술이 아니라 환경으로 작동한다고 주장한다. 그러나 이들의 주장에는 역설적으로 기술결정론이라는 비난이 따라붙는다. 본 논문 은 미디어 생태학과 체화된 인지 관점을 접목함으로 기술결정론 중심의 미디 어 관점을 탈피하기 위해 작성되었다. 제임스 깁슨(James Gibson)의 어포던스 (affordance)와 움베르또 마뚜라나(Humberto R. Maturana)와 프란시스코 바렐라 (Francisco J. Varela)의 오토포이에시스(autopoiesis)의 개념으로 미디어 발달 과 정을 살펴봄으로 미디어는 몸을 기반으로 한 생태적 환경으로 작동될 때 생 명력을 지닐 수 있음을 확인한다.
Abstract
In post-human discussions, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and information technology present a rosy alternative that will bring about a new revolution beyond human nature. In other points, post-humanists argue human domination by technology will intensify. In such an era, media discussions need to reconsider the relationship between humans and technology, and they want to take the media ecology perspective proposed by Herbert Marshall McLuhan, Jacques Ellul, Neil Postman, and others as a starting point. They argue that media is an extension of human perception and operates as an environment, not just a simple technology. However, their arguments paradoxically be criticized as technological determinism. This paper was written to escape the media perspective centered on technological determinism by grafting the media ecology and embodied cognition perspectives. Examining the media development process through the concepts of affordance by James Gibson and autopoiesis by Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela confirms that media can have vitality when it operates as an ecological environment based on the body.
