Abstract
This article attempts to explore Hans’s Journey by Philip Jaisohn as the first fiction in English not only in Korean American Literature, but also in Asian American Literature. It argues that in the history of Korean American Literature the novella precedes by ten years The Grass Roof (1931) by Younghill Kang, which has been so far regarded as the first fiction in English. Furthermore, this article categorizes Hansu’s Journey not as a historical novel, but a political novel in that it deals mainly with political affairs and often uses narrative to provide commentary on political events, systems and theories. In addition, this article argues that although the novella suffers from a lack of plot developments and structure, it is very good at creating the characters and their characterization and at the use of figures of speech and symbolic images. The dominant motif of journey, as the title of the novella implies, is most appropriate to the theme of the protagonist's spiritual development or mental awakening. In conclusion, the novella has some literary merits that are of significance to those who are interested in the development of Korean American Literature in particular and Asian American Literature in general.
