캐롤 크리스트의 본 논문은 1976년에 발표된 오래된 글이다. 1970년대는 문학과 신학에서 페미니즘이 본격적인 대항담론으로 부상하던 때였다. 그래서 여성신학은 신학의 남성중심성을 비판하고, 여성의 영적 체험의 독특성을 서술해보려고 시도했으며, 여성문학비평도 마찬가지로 문학 속 고정 관념적 여성 이미지를 수정하고, 여성 고유의 경험을 발견하려고 힘썼다. 여성신학자였던 크리스트가 문학에서 여성의 종교적 경험을 제대로 찾을 수 있다고 획기적인 주장을 펼치면서, 본 논문은 기존의 문학과 종교연구에 페미니즘 시각을 추가할 때 필요했던 연구의 방법론을 고찰하고 있다. 비록 오래전 발표된 논문이지만 결코 낡거나 오래 묵지 않고, 오히려 현재 1960년대 네이든 스콧의 신학적 문학연구의 틀에 머물고있는 한국 문학과 종교 연구에 새로운 차원을 열고, 활력을 더해줄 수 있으리라 기대하며 본 호에 번역하여 게재한다.
Abstract
Carol P. Christ wrote this essay for the 1975 Annual Conference of American Academy of Religion and published it in the following year. In the 1970s, the second wave of feminism reached its peak changing all disciplines one way or another. The field of theology was no exception; some women theologians started to criticize the patriarchal traditional theology and attempted to restore women’s experiences to a new theology. In the same vein, feminist literary criticism also attempted at a revision of women’s image in literature and discover women’s experiences. As a feminist theologian, Christ presented a groundbreaking possibility that literature should be a place to discover women’s religious experiences. In this essay, she studied an academic methodology by which a feminist perspective could be creatively added to the interdisciplinary study of literature and religion.
