본 논문은 두 명의 영향력 있는 작가인 엘리엇과 포우의 작품들을 분석하면서 소용돌이에 대한 그들의 개념을 탐구한다다. 포우의 「혼란 속으로의 하강」은 한 남자가 자연 소용돌이와 마주치는 참혹한 이야기를 보여주는 반면, 엘리엇의 『황무지』는 자연 요소들의 파괴력과 그것들의 상징적 함의를 탐구한다. 이 작품들의 비교 분석을 통해, 본 논문은 인간 경험의 심리적이고 실존적인 측면을 조명하면서 엘리엇과 포우의 소용돌이 사이의 주제적이고 상징적인 연관성을 밝히는 것을 목표로 한다. 이 작품들은 서로 다른 문학적 전통과 스타일에 속하지만, 그것들은 소용돌이를 다루는 데 있어 인간의 존재를 형성하는 격동의 힘에 대한 은유로서 특정한 모티브를 공유한다.
Abstract
This paper delves into the works of two influential literary figures, Edgar Allan Poe and T. S. Eliot, to explore their notion of vortex. While Poe’s “A Descent into the Maelström” presents a harrowing tale of a man’s encounter with a natural vortex, Eliot’s The Waste Land explores the destructive power of natural elements and their symbolic implications. Through a comparative analysis of these works, this paper aims to uncover the thematic and symbolic connections between Poe and Eliot’s vortex, shedding light on the psychological and existential aspects of human experience. While these works belong to different literary traditions and styles, they share certain thematic resonances in their treatment of the vortex as a metaphor for the turbulent forces that shape human existence.
