The purposes in this study are to examine whether the effects of marital status on elderly mortality are selective or protective. To analyze the relationship between marital status (and/or health status) and mortality, the Retirement History Longitudinal Survey data and event history analysis as statistical tool are used. The statistical results indicate that the marital status does not have a direct selective and protective on the elderly mortality, while the health status has a direct effect. Marital status has a buffering effect with health status on the elderly mortality. Marital status has no effect on mortality when elderly men were healthy, but the effect of marital status on mortality has an indirect negative effect if frail. This finding provides evidence of an adverse selection into marriage based on self-perceived general health.
