결혼상태의 지속 및 변화가 노인의 건강에 미치는 영향 - 경제자원 및 사회적 관계망의 매개효과 검증 -

초록

본 연구의 목적은 노인의 결혼상태가 건강에 어떠한 영향을 미치며, 그 과정에서 경제자원 및 사회적 관계망이 매개역할을 하는가를 실증적으로 검증하는 것이다. 이러한 연구목적을 위해 한국노동연구원의 고령화연구패널조사 1차년도와 2차년도 자료를 이용하였으며, 1차년도(2006년)에 이어 2차년도(2008년) 조사까지 유지된 표본에서 1차년도 기준으로 65세 이상의 남녀 노인 3510명을 분석하였다. 주요분석결과는 다음과 같다. (1) 지속적 무배우 노인과 유배우 노인의 신체 건강, 정신 건강, 주관적 건강 수준은 유의한 차이가 없다. 반면 1, 2차년도 사이에 배우자를 상실한 노인은 유배우 노인에 비해 우울감이 높고, 이 기간 동안 지속적으로 배우자가 없는 노인에 비해서도 세 가지 건강차원 모두 나쁜 것으로 나타나 같은 무배우 상태임에도 불구하고 건강 결과에서 차이를 보였다. (2) 자녀만남빈도는 배우자 상실이 정신 건강에 미치는 영향을 매개하는 요인이었다. 즉, 1, 2차년도 사이에 배우자를 상실한 노인은 지속적으로 배우자가 없는 노인에 비해 자녀와의 만남이 빈번하며 이는 우울감을 낮추는 기제로 작용하였다. (3) 친구 ․ 이웃만남빈도는 지속적으로 배우자가 없는 노인의 우울감을 낮출 뿐만 아니라 주관적 건강수준을 높이는데도 중요한 매개요인으로 작용하였다. (4) 건강의 하위차원에 따라 결혼상태가 건강에 영향을 미치는 과정에서 작용하는 자원의 성격과 역할이 상이하였다. 본 연구는 전국 규모의 종단자료의 분석을 통해 노년기 결혼상태의 지속 및 변화와 건강과의 인과관계에 대한 논리적인 검증을 시도하였으며, 특히 결혼상태와 건강 관련성을 설명함에 있어 결혼상태를 구분하는 기준과 경제자원 및 사회적 관계망의 역할에 따라 건강에 미치는 영향이 상이하다는 점을 밝혔다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

Abstract

Using data from Korean Longitudinal Study on Aging (KLoSA), this study examines how continuity and change of marital status is associated with health over time, focusing on the mediating effects of economic resources and social networks. KLoSA data set has two waves of interviews, and for this study, 3510 aged 65 and over were selected. The major findings are as follows. First, there was no statistically significant difference in health between continuously married older adults and continuously single older adults. However, older adults who had transition from being married to being single showed lower mental health than continuously married older adults. Also, they showed lower physical and mental health, and self-rated health than continuously single older adults. Second, the mediating effect of contact with children on the association between marital status and mental health was supported. Third, the mediating effect of contact with friends/neighbors on the association between marital status and mental health and self-rated heath was confirmed. Lastly, the roles of economic resources and social networks in the effects of marital status on health differ depending upon the sub-dimension of health. In conclusion, the findings of this study show the different pathways through which marital status is associated with health for 3 different groups of older adults, being continuously single, being continuously married, and making transition from being married to being single.
