Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of self-silencing behavior on the loneliness nature of girls’ high school students and how they are influenced by inner shame. For the study, 501 girls’ high school students from Kyonggi-Province were studied. Based on the results, our theory that self-silencing behavior does indeed affect students’ loneliness with the mediation of innate shame, was supported and verified. The direct effect of self-silencing behavior was statistically significant, and indirectly, the effects on the mediation of negative mood regulation expectancies were substantial. Therefore, this study suggests that high self-silencing behavior regulates, and may even control one’s shame, loneliness and as a result, low self-silencing level could possibly minimize loneliness and shame in such people. The results and limitations of this study are discussed in relation to and compared with the results of other similar studies.
