노동자계급 여성의 어머니 노릇(mothering)의 구성과 갈등: 경인지역을 중심으로

본 연구는 소비 자본주의 사회의 맥락에서 더욱 정교해지는 모성 이데올로기가 노동자 여성의 계급적 지위와 맞물려 어머니 노릇이 어떻게 갈등적으로 구성되고 있는지를 분석하였다. 연구의 대상은 부천과 인천 지역에 거주하고 있는 본인 또는 남편이 생산직에 종사하는 40세 미만의 노동자 가족의 유배우 여성들이다. 사례 어머니들은 취업여부와 상관없이 자녀들의 교육을 어머니 노릇의 핵심에 두고 있으며, 자신들의 어머니 노릇을 경제 자본과 문화 자본의 결핍으로 나타나는 ‘부족함’으로 의미화하고 있다. 한편 집중적 방식의 어머니 노릇에 관한 이데올로기는 전업 어머니들과 취업 어머니들을 경쟁적으로 불안감에 휩싸이게 한다. 대부분의 어머니들은 일에 대한 욕구와 좋은 어머니 노릇 사이에서 끊임없이 갈등하며 경쟁하고 있다. 여성으로서 최고의 덕목은 모성이고 여성의 일차적인 역할은 자녀를 돌보는 좋은 어머니라는 모성 이데올로기는 일과 모성의 양면성에 자리 잡고 있는 것이다. 사례 여성들은 취업여부와 상관없이 모성 이데올로기를 자신들의 역할과 입장을 합리화하고 정당화하는데 사용하며, 이러한 이데올로기적 노동은 가부장제 사회에서 여성들 간의 분리와 갈등을 심화시키게 된다.
Abstract
This article examines how the class status of female workers is socially constructed mothering with the sophisticated ideology of motherhood. The objectives of this research are subject to working class women and wives of working class men under 40 years old, working in Bucheon and Incheon. This paper found that regardless the status of employment, working class women regard the education of their children as the crucial role of mothering and therefore they signify their mothering as "lack" due to the shortage of both economic and cultural capital. In addition to this, both working and full time mothers are anxious about the ideology of mothering by the concentrated method. As a result, the working mothers are continuously in conflict with the position between a good mother and a good worker. The ideology of motherhood, which defines the virtue of women and the crucial role of women as good mothering, is occupied with the dichotomy between work and motherhood. The cases of this study use the ideology of motherhood as justifying their role and position and hence the ideological work is caused by the division and conflict among the women within the patriarchal society.
