마을 제의의 형성과 공연화 과정 - 제천시 송학면 입석리 선돌제를 중심으로

충청북도 제천시 송학면 입석리에서는 마을 공동체 제의인 ‘선돌제’를 매년 지낸다. 그러나 선돌제는 전통성을 지니고 유지해 온 마을 공동체 제의가 아니라, 현대에 와서 새롭게 형성한 제의다. 1986년부터 시작한 ‘현대적 제의’라고 할 수 있다. 또한 제천시와 입석리 마을 주민들은 2011년부터 ‘충북민속예술축제’와 ‘한국민속예술축제’에 참가하기 위해 마을 공동체 제의인 선돌제를 새로운 공연물로 만들어가고 있다. ‘민속예술축제’ 참가를 목적으로 하지만, 제천시와 마을 주민들 입장에서 마을 공동체 제의인 선돌제를 공연으로 새롭게 만드는 창작을 시도하는 것이라고 할 수 있다. 선돌제의 공연화는 선돌제라는 공동체 제의만을 대상으로 하지 않는다. 선돌제를 중심으로 마을에서 전승하는 설화와 기자 의례 등을 혼합한 ‘마을 민속의 공연화’라고 할 수 있다. 이 글에서는 마을에서 전승하는 설화와 민속을 토대로 어떻게 선돌제를 형성하고 있는지, 그리고 선돌제의 공연이 어떻게 이루어지는지 그 모든 과정을 살펴보려 하였다. 이를 토대로 선돌제의 형성과 공연화가 지니는 의미와 그러한 과정에서 나타난 한계점이 무엇인지를 검토하였다.
Abstract
The villagers at Ipseok-ri, Songhak-myeon, Jecheon-si, Chungcheongbuk-do Province perform village community rites called 'Seondolje.' 'Seondolje' is not the village rite which has been maintained with traditionality, but a rite newly formed in modern times. In short, it can be called a 'modern rite' starting from 1986. In addition, the village people in Jecheon-si and Ipseok-ri have been making 'Seondolje' into a new performance event since 2011 in order to participate in 'Chungbuk Folk Art Festival' and 'Korea Folk Art Festival.' Although 'Seondolje' is aimed at participating in 'Folk Art Festival', from the position of Jecheon-si and the people in the village, they are making an attempt to re-create 'Seondolje' into the form of performance. However, the villagers don't aim at a village community rite only in the process of making a village rite-'Seondolje' into performance. Instead, they are trying to achieve 'Dramatized Performance of Village Folk' mixed with the village-transmitted tales and a rite of son-begetting wishes, etc. around 'Seondolje.' Through this writing, this study looked into the whole process, in which how the village people in Ipseok-ri made village rites on the basis of the village-transmitted tales and folk, and how they are leading them into dramatized performance. In addition, this study examined what is the point of formation of village rites and their dramatized performance, and also what are the limitations shown in such a process.
