Abstract

This study examines the concrete aspects of the spirit of integrity and anti-Japanese consciousness demonstrated by Confucian scholars during the late Joseon Dynasty, focusing on the “Euphyeollok-Gyeongsinilgi” (泣血錄 庚辛日記). Kim Seok-jin (金奭鎭, 1843–1910), in the face of national crisis and the loss of sovereignty, resolutely rejected the titles (爵位) and stipends (下賜金) conferred by the Japanese authorities, embodying the Confucian ideal of “not serving two masters” (不事二君) through his act of self-determined martyrdom (自靖殉國). His death was not a mere act of suicide, but a form of moral and political resistance resulting from deep contemplation and principled determination. The Japanese colonial government, concerned that Kim Seok-jin’s martyrdom might influence other colonial officials, attempted to force his son, Kim Young-han (金甯漢, 1878–1950), to inherit the titles and stipends. Kim Young-han steadfastly refused, repeatedly submitting petitions (陳情書) to uphold his father’s will and resist Japanese overtures. This process illustrates how Confucian integrity was transformed from a matter of personal conviction into an official, documented form of resistance against colonial power. By analyzing this primary source, “Euphyeollok-Gyeongsinilgi,” this study sheds light on the internal struggles and anti-colonial consciousness of Confucian literati during Korea’s modern transition, as well as the significance of non-violent and cultural resistance. Furthermore, the cases of Kim Seok-jin and Kim Young-han demonstrate how Confucian values were integrated into the national movement and how spiritual and cultural resistance played a crucial role in the history of the Korean independence movement.
