Abstract

This paper attempts to explore historical writings on the Jeju 4.3 events through the lens of gender. After reviewing gender issues in war/genocide studies, this paper, for the first time, examines what has been recorded about women and what has not been included in the official and academic investigations of Jeju 4.3. The truth commission report largely overlooked women’s experiences, especially women’s active roles in resistance and reconstruction. Although the report addressed women’s double jeopardy, it often presented sex-based violence as an example of the atrocities of the suppressor. The dilemma of the transitional justice process about Jeju 4.3 such as the narrow concept of victim and the emphasis on objective evidence tended to undermine women’s voices. There is little academic research on women’s stories, but it tried to demonstrate women’s unique experiences of resistance, sexual violence, network, ritual, and remembering, signifying women’s bodies as sites of national violence. However, it still needs to articulate other gender issues and women’s stories from diverse perspectives. This paper underscores the inclusion of women’s history and narratives to better understand the past and prevent future genocides. It also suggests future direction of research for making women more visible and applying gender to a different context.
