Abstract
This study analyzes the formation of Hallyu culture, changes in its transmission media, and pathways of cross-cultural dissemination, focusing on audiovisual content and popular music. It employs literature review, historical analysis, and case study methods. Six cases—Winter Sonata, Dae Jang Geum, PSY, BTS, Parasite, and Squid Game—are examined through six analytical elements: cultural content production, industrial organization, policy and media environment, platform distribution, overseas reception, and participation and retransmission. The analysis shows that, across different stages of Hallyu’s development, in the early period, local broadcasters and distribution agencies functioned as major gateways for overseas circulation. With the expansion of digital media, the distribution structure shifted toward one in which YouTube, social media, global streaming platforms, and international distribution networks operate together. The unit of transmission expanded from complete dramas or music products to reusable elements such as dances, scenes, characters, costumes, and visual symbols. Overseas audiences also participated in retransmission through translation, sharing, imitation, editing, and recreation. These changes indicate that the cross-cultural dissemination of Hallyu does not end when content reaches overseas audiences, but continues through interpretation, reuse, and circulation to new audiences. The circulation identified in this study is limited to retransmitted content being re-exposed on platforms and reaching new audiences. The study does not demonstrate that audience responses feed back into subsequent content production or industrial organization. Its significance lies in examining Hallyu not simply as the success of individual content or specific policies, but as a process in which changes in transmission media, distribution gateways, units of circulation, and audience roles are interconnected.
