Abstract

This study examines the expressive characteristics of traces in contemporary ceramics and analyzes how they relate to traditional making culture and cultural identity. The research was conducted through a literature review and case studies of ceramic works. Previous studies on changes in contemporary ceramics, the concept and formation of traces, and the relationship between ceramic tradition and cultural identity were reviewed. Based on this framework, traces were classified into three categories: traces formed by materials and natural processes, traces created through bodily and making actions, and traces produced through the accumulation of time and change. The case studies analyzed the works of Lee Kang-hyo, Shiro Tsujimura, and Yeesookyung in terms of making actions, materials and firing, and breakage and reassembly. The works of Yoon Kwang-cho, Kim Yik-yung, and Shin Sang-ho were also examined to identify how traditional ceramic techniques and forms have been transformed in contemporary practice. The results show that traces appear as clay shrinkage and cracking, glaze flows, ash deposits, hand and tool marks, cutting and joining, abrasion, and breakage. These traces form texture, lines, repetition and rhythm, irregularity, layering, and stratification, while revealing the making process, the artist’s actions, and accumulated time. The artists do not simply reproduce traditional materials, techniques, and forms but transform and reconstruct them through individual approaches. Thus, traces function as formative elements that record process and time while connecting traditional ceramic culture with contemporary practice and expressing cultural identity.
