Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyze the early resignation, turnover and avoidance of long-term employment of generation MZ seafarers working in the Korean shipping industry. Generation MZ is a unique word made in Korea, referring to young people born between the late 1980s and early 2000s. In the United States and Europe, it is called Millennials+Gen Z. To achieve the purpose of the study, this study theoretically considered the unique job perspective of the young generation MZ. Based on the theoretical argument, it was revealed that there are different perspectives of the older and younger generations on job, resignation, and turnover. This study found that many generation MZ seafarers are resign or changing jobs within five years of their first employment through government statistics. According to the results of the study, there were various reasons for the early resignation and avoidance of long-term boarding among MZ generation seafarers. The issues included insufficient rest time on board, difficulties in taking holidays and changing shifts, the company breaking its promises regarding holidays, a lack of interest in personal growth and development, a lack of consideration for personal time and privacy, difficulties in balancing work and family life, and a lack of communication with the company and superiors. Therefore, this study proposed the following improvement measures for the shipping industry: compliance with shift patterns for seafarers and land-based crew members, redesign of career paths and job assignments, transparency of information on personnel, wages, and benefits, and strengthening of job processes and communication. Additionally, the government policy improvement measures proposed in this study include the following: continuous expansion of the reserve rate for onboard personnel, regulation of foreign crew hiring and maintenance of youth employment, management and supervision of wage disparities between maritime and land-based positions, and enhancement of the occupational appeal of crew members.
