Abstract

(Background and Purpose) Recently, residential areas around commercial districts, such as Seongsu, Hyehwa, and Yeonnam-dong, have transformed into commercial areas. If standalone houses in residential areas are built, diversity can be maintained while preserving the area's uniqueness, making it a famous attraction that allows people to feel the charm of the New Tro. In addition, according to lifestyle changes, cafés are also changing to a New-Tro design; therefore, using a standalone house is useful from a business and design perspective. Accordingly, this study suggests a direction for N design through examples and analyses of New-Tro cafés using standalone houses. Thus, we provide primary data on the New-Tro Café design using standalone houses. (Method) This study selects an entire standalone house in Yeonnam-dong, Seoul, transformed into a café. First, through a theoretical examination, the value of utilizing standalone houses and the concept of New-Tro design are clarified, along with an exploration of evolving design trends in cafés. Second, previous studies are used to investigate the traits of New-Tro spatial design, deriving essential keywords. Third, based on these keywords, the New-Tro spatial design of remodeled cafés within standalone houses is analyzed. Finally, based on these outcomes, distinctive New-Tro spatial design characteristics for cafés utilizing standalone houses are summarized, and design directions following these characteristics are proposed. (Results) Building upon earlier research, the characteristics of New-Tro Café design using standalone houses are categorized as "formative traits," "cultural traits," "aesthetic traits," and "individualistic traits." Case analyses reveal that many cafés have effectively repurposed existing spaces, often creating elevated ceilings through ceiling-finish removal. Furthermore, using materials and colors resembling a nearby environment shows distinctiveness. Yard and fence utilization contribute to openness and accessibility; however, a limited scale decreases utilization rates. Although analog elements and greenery are thoughtfully integrated, nostalgic elements are minimal, particularly lacking references to the history or storytelling of the standalone house. (Conclusion) Concerning formative traits, enhancing the comprehension of spatial dynamics within standalone houses is vital for successful spatial rearrangements involving reinterpretation of existing structural components and finishes. Second, regarding cultural traits, selecting finishes and colors that harmonize with the surrounding environment and maximize yard use through strategic furniture placement and scale expansion is imperative. Third, aesthetic traits necessitate distinctive analog elements along with the incorporation of contemporary furniture to achieve a harmonious blend with the interior. Finally, individualistic traits require storytelling to convey the historical essence of a standalone house, which serves as the basis for conceptual remodeling.
