Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role preference of social robots and their appearance according to the students’ personality traits. For this purpose, a survey was conducted on 274 middle and high school students in Seoul and Ulsan. The measurement tools for the research were the Big-five model(Donnellan et al., 2006) and the social robot teacher role questionnaires developed by the researchers. First, the one-way ANOVA was conducted to confirm the difference in the expected role of social robots in accordance to students’ personality traits. As a result, the expected role between learning peers and academic experts showed significant difference. In addition, chi-square analysis was conducted to confirm the preferable appearance when performing the role of each social robot. For the social robot playing a learning competence supporter role, the personality group of extraversion, neuroticism, and openness preferred the machine-like appearance whereas those of agreeableness and conscientiousness preferred the human-like appearance. The study findings provides implications for developing educational social robots and designing social robots considering students’ personality traits.
