Abstract
God has called the church to preach the gospel of truth, and to bear witness to the freedom we have in Christ Jesus, but there are forces that oppose it and hold creatures captive, away from the truth. Thus, ‘mission’ and ‘liberty’ are inextricably linked, and missiology must grapple with the question of freedom through the gospel and the bondage that holds it captive. The forms of non-freedom in which human beings are ideologically bound can manifest themselves in different ways in different times, but this paper focuses on how the idea of postmodernism, which has penetrated deeply into our lives since the mid-twentieth century, has had a profound impact on our thinking about Christian freedom and oppression. In the field of missiology, it has been pointed out that the relativism and pluralism of postmodernism denies the existence of truth and thus suppresses the proclamation of the only truth and freedom of faith. This paper seeks to provide an understanding of the non-liberal nature of postmodernism and its theological problems that can suppress the freedom of the Korean church to believe and mission, and to offer an alternative. This paper explains that postmodernism rejects modernism’s ‘univocity with implied commonality’ and absolutises a single hermeneutic perspective: ‘everything is contextual’ and ‘everything has absolute difference without commonality’. As a result, it denies the possibility of representing for anything. It threatens the freedom to understand and proclaim the total depravity of the human race, that the penalty of sin and death has fallen upon all mankind, without any one person being involved, from the sin and death of Adam, the representative of humanity, and the ‘principle of representation’, that one person, Jesus Christ, came as a man to represent humanity, to take our sins upon himself and to die as punishment, so that all who believe and are united with him may be justified. It also denies the gospel of justification, whereby one is justified, not by good works, but by faith in the death and resurrection of Christ Jesus, now my representative. And the hermeneutical flood of postmodern ‘difference’ threatens the freedom of faith and proclamation from the perspective of ‘sameness and similarity’, of living a life ‘similar’ to that of our brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ and our forefathers in the faith. It also identifies the problem that postmodernism has absolutised the view of ‘difference’ and is ultimately heading in the direction of nonfreedom, installing the power of earthly creaturely ‘mediators’ other than Jesus Christ to ‘mediate’ and ‘arbitrate’ the fragmented differences that have arisen as a result of seeing everything differently. In response, this paper will finally expose the biblical hermeneutical position of ‘image and figure’ to suggest that through a theology and hermeneutics of ‘similarities in univocity’, the Christian gospel of truth can proclaim that beyond the non-freedom imposed by the ideological and hermeneutical bondage of postmodernism’s ‘difference’, the Christian gospel of truth brings true freedom.
