한국에서의 스타현상의 시작은 미국 영화 속의 스타들을 통해서였다. 1910년대부터 한해 수십 편씩 수입돼 상영된 미국 영화들 속의 배우들은 아주 높고 먼 산의 정상에 사는 신들처럼 선망과 동경의 대상이 되었고, 이들을 통해서 한국의 관객들은 스타라는 현상을 자연스럽게 학습했다. 연쇄극이라는 이름으로 연극과 영화의 절충형태의 공연물이 유통되기 시작하면서 드디어 영상 속에서 연기하는 사람들이 배우라는 이름으로 나타나기 시작했다. 그러나 풍경의 한 부분처럼 서 있던 배우들은 연기노동자 이상도 이하도 아니었다. 1923년 <월하의 맹서>로 한국에서도 본격적인 무성 영화가 제작되기 시작하면서 배우들은 픽쳐 퍼스낼리티로서 자신의 존재를 드러내기 시작한다. 드디어 관객들은 영화 속에서 연기를 하는 전문인을 알아보기 시작한 것이다. 1926년 나운규의 <아리랑>이 도래하면서 한국에서의 스타덤은 한꺼번에 개화한다. <아리랑>의 엄청난 성공으로 나운규는 연기 전문가에서 모든 사람이 알아볼 수 있는 스타로 거듭난다. 반항아로서의 그의 이미지는 당시 식민지의 현실을 관통해 강력한 정서적 동일시와 투사를 만들어낸다. 그의 스타성을 전략적으로 이용하고 관리하려는 초기적 의미의 스타시스템이 작동하기 시작한 것도 이 즈음이다. 발성영화의 시대가 도래하면서 스타의 조건에 목소리가 추가되었다. 문예봉은 조용하고 단아한 이미지, 신파적 연기와는 확실하게 구별되는 중립적 연기로 단숨에 발성영화 시대의 스타로 등극한다. 관객들은 나운규와 함께 분노를 터뜨렸고, 문예봉을 보면서 상실된 시간을 그리워했다. 1920,30년대의 식민지 조선 사회는 경제적 잉여, 사회 시스템의 근대적 정비, 문화의 산업화 등 스타덤이 성립되기 위한 중요한 조건들을 결여하고 있었다. 일제의 강력한 검열 또한 그것의 성립에 부정적 요소로 기능했다. 그러나 식민지라는 힘겨운 현실 속에서 관객들의 스타를 향한 정서적 유대는 다른 어느 나라에서보다 강력했다. 산업적 경제적 조건이 결여됐지만 고통의 공감을 통해서 만들어진 강력한 정서적 연대감, 이것이 당시 한국적 스타덤의 요체인 것이다.
Abstract
Beginning of stardom in Korea was provoked by stars in American films. They were adored and worshipped as the gods on Olympus as American films poured into this small country under Japanese colonialism. Therefore, it was natural that Korean film-goers adapted themselves to this star phenomenon through them. As the chaining play, mixture of theatre and film, was invented, picture performers showed up in film parts of these plays, but they couldn't claim themselves more than mere performing labours. It wasn't until the appearance of A Vow Under the Moon, the first silent film in Korea that the performers claimed their beings as picture personalities. Finally, audience became to be able to recognize actors and their expertises of acting. Stardom in Korea fully broke out with the release of Arirang, 1926. With its recordable hit in the market, Na Unkyu, leading actor of the movie, seized the position of the first Korean star. He was a rebel hero, who produced strong self-idenfication and projection with the audience suffering from Japanese colonialism. It was also through him that people in industry tried to launch a star system, which enabled them to tactically manage his stardom. The first talkie film in Korea, Chunhyang story, added voice on the list of conditions for stardom. Moon Yebong, with her grace and restrained acting, acceded to the throne of stardom in this new era of talkie. Film-goers bursted their anger with Na Unkyu and missed about things they lost under the colonialism. Korean society in 1920,30 was in lack of modern social system and cultural industrialization, which were inevitable for advent of stardom. Hard censorship of colonial government also worked as a negative factor for this. However, the cruel reality of colonialism forced audience to feel the strongest link with the stars. Therefore, I can boil down Korean stardom in those times to two phrases, which are the lack of social, economic conditions and the strong emotional bond enabled by common feeling of suffering between audience and stars.
