Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis의 가이드라인에 따라 연구를 진행하였다.
Abstract
Even though motor coordination plays an important role in performing physical activities and daily activities, children and youth with disabilities experience motor skill deficits. It has been widely studied that participating in an intervention improves motor skills in children and youth. Many studies have been conducted in this area, but the interpretation of the studies can vary depending on an individual’s perspective because there is no review study such as a systematic review or meta-analysis. Thus, the purpose of the current study was to examine the effects of interventions on motor skills in children and youth with disabilities using the meta-analysis approach. A team consisting of four researchers conducted this study with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis guidelines. After the review, 28 variables from 18 studies were included in the meta-analysis. A random effect model revealed that the effect size of the intervention for children and youth with disabilities was large((δ = 1.38, SE = 0.22, p < 0.001, 95% confidence interval [0.95, 1.81]). As the effect size shows heterogeneity, moderator analyses were conducted. The results indicated that a total time of intervention(≥ 1140, 1139 ≤), single time (≥50, 49≤), measures of motor coordination(Oseresky, KTK, others), and types of disability(intellectual disability only, developmental disability) were significant moderators. These results mean that the motor coordination of children and youth with disabilities can be largely improved through the participation of an intervention, and the effect can vary depending on the moderators. When developing an intervention for motor coordination in children and youth with disabilities, these characteristics should be considered. More studies using a randomized control trial, double-blind design, and measuring retention should be conducted to improve the quality of studies.
