Abstract
Hong Sang-soo's film <Grass> (2018) is a work with a sophisticated and multi-layered structure in a minimalist form. Minimalism generally refers to the artistic tendency to provide a direct perceptual experience of the basic elements that constitute the form, excluding decorative elements or subjective and emotional expressiveness. <Grass> removes the usual cinematic time that has been allocated to the arrangement of characters, actions, and events that are customarily required for the progress of the narrative, that is, the conventional narrative time, and is a film in a minimalistic visual composition. It provides a unique perceptual experience about the basic elements that make up the structure of a film, such as the time of the movie, the arrangement of viewpoints, and the relationship between words and images. And through this, Hong want to realize the cinematic practice of ‘reviewing the clichéd experience’. In particular, <Grass> introduces a double observer perspective, suggesting not only the possibility of a plural and multi-layered film world, but also the possibility of an open interpretation of the world.
