Abstract

In post-liberation Korean society, peasants were regarded as the collective embodiment of national identity. The Korean literary field, which actively engaged in debates on the direction of state-building, paid close attention to the role of peasants and elaborated theories of peasant literature. Leftist writers who took the lead in the literary scene immediately after Liberation viewed the rural life trapped in the exploitative tenancy system as historically backward and emphasized the role of literature in enlightening peasants into modern people. Through the image of the “fighting peasant,” they sought to cultivate the affective tone of revolutionary romanticism. Yi Ki-yŏng’s Gaebyeok (The Great Opening) and An Hoe-nam’s Nongmin ui Biae (The Peasant’s Sorrow) vividly reveal the Enlightenment-oriented aims of transforming the feudal peasantry into modern national subjects. What this study highlights, however, is that within these narratives of Enlightenment, figures of peasants emerge in ways that subvert the narrator’s didactic intentions. In Gaebyeok, set against the backdrop of North Korea’s land reform, the evaluative narrator attempts to regulate the disorder and anxiety provoked among the masses by mobilizing a comic affect. This comic tone legitimizes land reform and successfully transforms the impoverished peasant into a representative of the people. Yet within this comic frame, the protagonist, appointed as a peasant committee member, is depicted as suspended between the demands of the future and the realities of the present. The revolutionary passion central to the discourse of peasant literature thus dissipates along with the protagonist’s comic portrayal. This dynamic exposes the persistence of a lived reality in peasant literature that could not be fully disciplined by political discourse. In Nongmin ui Biae, set in the South on the eve of state formation, the tragic life of the impoverished Seo Tae-ŭng is employed to awaken national historical consciousness. The evaluative narrator underscores the suffering of reality while calling for peasants to transcend feudal structures and take up the role of fighters for the nation. Yet the peasants as represented fail to be enlightened as revolutionary subjects. Instead, in the midst of tragedy, they respond not through revolutionary struggle but by empathizing with the suffering of their neighbors. In this process, the romantic passion oriented toward a promised future is lost, leaving only an acute awareness of pain as the defining condition of peasant life. Such representations reveal an aspect of Liberation that could not be subsumed into the historicist goal of building a nation-state. Peasant literature of the Liberation period thus sought to cultivate political ideals, but within it also resided a sensibility toward reality that could not be fully captured or explained by politicized emotions.
