초록

This article aims to research into problems which arise in translating participles of the Greek Bible into Korean. The Greek participle tells us a lot about communication-signals, because it can be used as a noun, adjective, adverb,or verb. Therefore Greek participle has more excellent expressions than any other language. Furthermore, it is said that this very versatility makes it capable of a rich variety of nuances, as well as a rich variety of abuses. The Greek participle has three categories, namely verbal participle, adjectival participle, substantival participle. This research deals with the adjectival participle and its Korean translation and its communication. Among the many problems of the Greek Bible translation and communication, the most difficult one is to render the participle found in the Greek Bible into Korean, because the Korean language has no participle syntactically. In this Study I shall concentrate on the use of adjectival participles. The adjective participle may function as an adjective and either modify a substantive (attributive) or describe something about it (predicate). The attributive participle has with an article (article + participle + noun; or article + noun + article + participle), while predicate participle has no article. Unlike the textbook grammar says, it will be discussed here that the participle with an article, namely the form of article + noun + article + participle, describes a preceding substantive. When the Greek participle with an article is translated as a predicate aspect into Korean, it is considered as an elaborate translation and communication that reflects the proper function of the Greek participle and can convey its meaning well.
