Abstract
In this article, I aim to uncover how MacIntyre’s concept of narrative contributes to ethics. MacIntyre first introduces the concept of narrative from the standpoint of action theory and self-identity theory. According to him, an action can be understood as it is incorporated into the agent’s life narrative. And the answer to the question of who I am can only be answered by looking into the entire life narrative drama that I am performing as an author. As for action and self-understanding, the narrative is essential for the interest of a good life. A life that is solidly integrated through narrative self-reflection is a type of life suitable for acquiring and cultivating various virtues that are beneficial to a good life such as practical wisdom, self-knowledge, integrity and consistency, sense of responsibility, love and friendship. However, it is not guaranteed that such a life is necessarily ethical. In this respect, the concept of narrative has its limitations, and MacIntyre supplements those limitations with the concept of tradition.
