Abstract
· Research topics: This study aims to investigate learners’ perceived changes and growth through their Problem-Based Learning (PBL) experiences, as well as the instructors’ perceptions on the learners’ change based on their observations and instructional support. · Research background: Previous studies have indicated that problem-based learning (PBL) positively influences the quality of learners' learning experiences and their motivation. However, few studies have investigated the in-depth changes experienced by learners from both learner and instructor perspectives. · Differences from prior research: While most existing studies have focused on the effects, design, and implementation of PBL, only a limited number have addressed learners’ perceptions and adaptive changes following PBL. This study distinguishes itself by exploring the deeper changes and growth of learners undergo as a result of their PBL experiences. · Research method: A qualitative research design was employed, involving interviews with 43 learners who had experienced PBL and 30 instructors who had implemented PBL in their classrooms. Based on the interview data, an analytical coding scheme was developed and applied to systematically analyze the qualitative responses. · Research results: Findings revealed that learners reported noticeable growth across five domains—problem-solving, collaboration, communication, motivation to learn, and interpersonal relationships—both before and after the PBL experience. However, the distribution and emphasis across domains and subdomains shifted after participating in PBL. Instructors similarly identified learner growth in the same five domains, with the most prominent changes observed in problem-solving ability (within the problem-solving domain), participation (within collaboration), and communication and presentation skills (within communication). · Contribution points and expected effects: The study offers meaningful insights into the impact of PBL on learners and emphasizes the importance of recognizing such growth. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to raising awareness of the importance of problem-based learning (PBL) among instructors and learners, and to enhancing their motivation to implement PBL in practice.
