Abstract
This study analyzed the characteristics of the Tripitaka Koreana by focusing on the title of the Tripitaka Koreana woodblock (板題) rather than the publication record (刊記) that researchers have focused on for a long time. The title of the Tripitaka Koreana woodblock(板題) consists of three types, Pansimje (板心題) with the title of the woodblock in the center, Panminje(板尾題) with the title of the woodblock at the end, and Pansuje(板首題) with the title of the woodblock at the beginning. Among the three types, the vast majority are Panminje(板尾題) and Pansuje(板首題). Woodblocks of Panminje(板尾題) and Pansuje(板首題) have several differences in shape. First, woodblocks of Panminje(板尾題) are about 5 to 10 cm larger than woodblocks of Pansuje(板首題). Second, sculptor’s names on woodblocks are engraved on the outside of the enclosure in the case of Panminje(板尾題), Sculptor’s names on woodblocks are engraved on the inside of the enclosure in the case of Pansuje(板首題). Third, the shape of the hinge and the size of the nail head are different. Fourth, woodblocks of Pansuje(板首題) all are made by Bubundaejangdogam (分司大藏都監). Woodblocks of Pansuje(板首題) are similar in form to the woodblocks of Saganpan (寺刊板) made by Haeinsa Temple, and part of page 13 of Volume 25 of the 『Mahapanya Paramita Sutra』 is engraved on the back of chapter 16 of volume 48 of the Sakanpan edition of the 『Avatamsaka Sutra』. The sculptor (刻手) of page 13 of Volume 25 of the 『Mahavanya Paramita Sutra』 is Seok-gwang (石光, 釋光), who is the sculptor of page 17 in Volume 48 of the 『Avatamsaka Sutra』. This suggests that Seok-gwang engraved page 13 of Volume 25 of the 『Mahavanya Paramita Sutra』 at Haeinsa Temple. There are also cases to the contrary. On the back of page 15 of Volume 10 of 『Mahayen Confucianism’s Mahayana Mahayana Susilicheonbicheonbal Daegyowang Sutra』, part of page 11 of 『Avatamsaka Sutra Bohyeonhaengwonpum』 was engraved. In this way, the Tripitaka Koreana, especially the woodblocks of Pansuje(板首題) and the woodblocks of Saganpan (寺刊板) have similarities in form. This suggests that the Tripitaka Koreana was engraved in two places or under two the authorities. Considering the contents on the back of the Saganpan and the Tripitaka Koreana, and the morphological similarities between the Saganpan and the woodblocks of Pansuje(板首題), it is highly likely that the Pansuje woodblocks were engraved in the area of Mt. Gayasan, where Haeinsa Temple is located.
