실질적 윤리의 필연성과 자아정체성: 테일러와 코스가드 철학에서 ‘좋음’ 개념을 중심으로

이 글의 주된 목적은 찰스 테일러와 크리스틴 코스가드 철학에서 도덕의 실재성과 자아정체성의 관계를 비교하는 것이다. 테일러와 코스가드의 견해는 무엇이 좋은 것인가와 같은 물음이 인간 존재에게 필연적이라는 통찰에 기초한다. 더불어 그들은 이 윤리적 물음을 정체성과 관련하여 이해하는데, 그 입장은 즉각적인 문제에 부딪힌다. 도덕성을 정체성과 연관 지어 이해할 경우 도덕적 명제는 상대적일 수밖에 없다. 인간 행위자는 자아정체성의 발로에서 좋음에 대한 인식을 달리한다. 만약 자아정체성에서 비롯하여 행위자마다 다양한 방식의 인식이 가능하다면, 좋음의 위상은 객관적이지도 실재적이지도 않다. 그러나 테일러와 코스가드는 이러한 상대주의를 거부한다. 오히려 이들은 인간에게 좋음이 갖는 위상을 절대적인 것으로 주장한다. 필자는 테일러와 코스가드가 좋음 개념이 가진 퍼즐을 어떤 식으로 해소하는지를 살펴본다. 좋은 것들에 대한 인간의 인식 방식 그리고 개인의 정체성과 관련하여 필자는 두 가지 형이상학적인 관점을 제안한다. 이 글은 크게 세 부분으로 나뉜다. 처음 부분은 테일러와 코스가드 각각의 논의 속에서 윤리적 필연성이 정체성과 어떤 관계를 이루는지를 분석한다. 두 번째 부분에서는, 테일러에게서 도덕성과 등치를 이루는 좋음의 틀이 왜 모순적인지를 드러낸다. 또한 코스가드가 좋음 개념에 관한 기존의 퍼즐을 어떤 식으로 해소하는지를 살펴봄으로써 테일러가 가진 좋음 개념을 재구성한다. 마지막으로, 테일러와 코스가드의 좋음 개념을 비교함으로써 이들이 상대편 입장에 비해 어떤 우위를 차지하는지를 모색한다.
Abstract
The main purpose of this paper is to explore moral realism and self-identity in the philosophies of Charles Taylor and Christine Korsgaard. Their perspectives stem from the recognition that questions about what is ‘good’ are inherent in human existence. Furthermore, they contextualize ethical inquiries in relation to the identity of the self, which immediately introduces challenges. If morality is interpreted in connection with individual identity, moral propositions inherently become relative. Divergent perceptions of the ‘good’ emerge among human agents as they express their self- identity. The objective reality of ‘good’ becomes elusive and non-objective when considering the multitude of possible recognition pathways available to each agent. However, Taylor and Korsgaard reject this relativism. Instead, they argue that the status of goodness is absolute. This paper delves into how Taylor and Korsgaard navigate the intricacies of defining the ‘good.’ Two metaphysical perspectives regarding human perception of good things and personal identity are proposed. The views of Taylor and Korsgaard are then attributed to these perspectives, examining the limitations of each point of view and elucidating how one perspective has an advantage over the other.
