이 논문은 어떻게 찰스 테일러의 철학에서 해석학적 성과로부터 인간 주체의 주체성과 정체성이 파악되고 있는지를 보여줄 목적으로 쓰여졌다. 테일러에 따르면, 인간 주체의 본질은 다름이 아니라 그가 표출이라고도 부르는 해석에 있다. 테일러에게 해석 혹은 표출은 주체의 주체성, 정체성을 결정짓는다. 테일러는 해석과 주체성, 정체성 사이의 그 긴밀한 관계를 보여주기 위해서, 감정(feeling)을 지목한다. 테일러에게 감정, 특히 주체-지시적 감정은 두 가지 면에서 해석이다. 그것은 동시에 상황에 대한 해석이기도 하면서 자기-해석이기도 하다. 테일러는 강한 평가를 사유하며 그 지점을 더욱 더 확신한다. 게다가 강한 평가는 주체-지시적 감정이 단지 내면의 어떠한 상태를 가리키는 것이 아니라 윤리적, 도덕적 영역에 맞닿아 있다는 것을 보여준다. 그런 관점에서 윤리성 혹은 도덕성은 주체의 정체성과 결부된다. 주체의 주체성, 정체성은 해석적이면서 윤리적이다. 테일러에게 해석과 윤리는 불가분이다. 결국 테일러는 그 지점을 보여주기 위해서 언어를 주목한다. 테일러에 따르면, 언어는 인간들이 사용하는 단어들의 집합을 가리키는 것이 아니라, 보다 넓은 의미에서 인간 주체의 본질이 해석학적 윤리에 있음을 드러낸다. 그런 의미에서 테일러는 인간 주체가 강한 평가를 본질로 삼는 자기-해석적 언어적 동물이라고 확신한다. 이 논문은 그 지점을 보여주는 것에 주력했다
Abstract
This paper aims to show that in the philosophy of Charles Taylor, the subjectivity and the identity of the subject are grasped from hermeneutics. According to Taylor, the essence of the human subject resides in interpretation, which he calls articulation. For Taylor, interpretation or articulation determines the subjectivity or identity of the subject. To highlight the link between interpretation and subjectivity, Taylor focuses his reflection on feeling. Feeling, especially that characterized by subject-reference, is interpretation in a dual manner: it comprises both interpretation of the situation and self-interpretation. Strong evaluation reveals this well. Moreover, strong evaluation shows that the subject-referring feeling, instead of designating one’s inner state, touches on ethics or morality. From this point of view, the subjectivity of the subject relates itself to morality. The identity of the subject is both interpretative and ethical. With Taylor, interpretation is inseparable from ethics. Ultimately, to illuminate this point, Taylor focuses on language. According to Taylor, language does not refer to a set of words but to the fact that the essence of the subject lies in ethical interpretation. In this sense, Taylor affirms that the subject is an animal of language whose essence lies in strong evaluation, which is hermeneutical.
