Abstract

This study examines the composition and meaning-making processes of semiotic resources—such as text, image, color, and layout—in contemporary visual art from a social semiotic perspective. To this end, it analyzes major works by American conceptual artist Barbara Kruger using the framework of visual design grammar proposed by Gunther Kress and Theo van Leeuwen, focusing on the three metafunctions: representation, interaction, and composition. As a result of the analysis, Kruger strategically juxtaposes text and image, subverts conventional gaze structures, and arranges visual elements to construct and critically appropriate key social discourses, including gender, power, consumer capitalism, and identity and so on. Her works function as semiotic practices that call the recipient – the viewer of the signs - not as a passive object/receiver but as an active subject/interpreter/participant in meaning-making. This study suggests and demonstrates how social semiotics, with its focus on the composition and socio-cultural functions of semiotic resources, can be applied to the analysis of visual art and offer empirical insight into its discursive potential.
