Abstract
The Greeks believed in the gods, they were religious people. But the secular approach is very Greek versus a religious approach. The Greek view presupposes that man lives in society. He is not a creature off by himself. He necessarily lives in society. He is conceivable to the Greeks only in a society. The Iliad and Odyssey of Homer, which are about a war, immediately are a kind of an artificial society put together for the purpose of defeating the Trojans and taking their city. The values that are the most important are community values. That is to say, the reward of good behavior is the admiration and the honor that a hero gets, and the most serious punishment he can suffer is to be shamed in front of that community. Honor is the most valued emotion which results from the evaluation and the respect of human oneself and others, who are rational and social beings. Hence, honor has been considered as a virtue which humans should have, regardless of the type of organizations, in order to keep their social activities that are harmonious and balanced. In that sense, philosophers have considered honor as 'one of the best virtues that should be pursued.'In this study, it has been considered how honor was defined philosophically in the early greek societies where honor first appeared, and how people at that time behaved to save their honor. While analyzing the concept of honor, it has also been made clear that why and how the importance of it was raised. Furthermore, it has been verified that honor is not in the realm of the right that human beings insist, but in the realm of duty which is required more when they go up to the noble position. The honor of the greek era has been discussed as a humane basis which allows human beings to overcome social disruption, the uneasiness from the future, and the radical moral hazard. Moreover, it is a basis which prepares a new value consciousness and moral attitude. On the basis of this concept of honor, the direction that our human beings should head for has also been discussed.
