Abstract

The concept of virtue(arete) from the Greek epic up to the tragedy, provides an important clue to understanding the human. This paper is aimed to see the archetypal features of Greek virtue by analyzing the concept of virtue in the works of Homer. First, in order to explain the scope of the virtue of the ancient Greek epic, it was introduced the division of the "body of excellence" and "the soul of excellence" in the Greek philosophy. Homer particularly emphasized the combat force and the virtue of body caused by the culture of war, and also pays attention to the virtue of the soul. Secondly, I analyze courage and the practical wisdom as typical virtue by analyzing the behavior patterns of the heroes in the ancient Greek epic. First of all, Homeric heroes show the power to dominate the passion. Then, they closely related to the virtue of courage, which is related to the fear. Homeric heroes overcome the fear of death, and show true courage while showing the inner conflicts. Finally, Homeric heroes have the practical wisdom. Homer is still not the same as wisdom to recognize the idea of' the Good claimed by Plato, but presents heroes to have practical wisdom of life and insight into human destiny through the Achilles and Odysseus' heroic activities. Third, I examine the honor(time) and glory(kleos) as the goals of virtue in the ancient Greek epic, and the hardship and adversity as a condition of the heroic virtues. Human strive after virtue through competition(agon), and acquire the honor and glory as it's result. Hercules, Achilles, and Odysseus were born as a hero, but became a hero through a lot of hardship and training. Greek Philosophers strive after virtue by education and the training of the soul.
