Abstract

The objective of this study is to appreciate the relationship between institutional affiliation, peer recognition, and scientific productivity. The Matthew effect and its influence has been rarely discussed in Korea. Following previous literature focusing on the Matthew effect in the reward system, the implication of the Matthew effect with respect to the global system of knowledge production is also addressed. Using dataset characterizing sociology departments that is constructed by aggregating information for individual faculties in 44 American universities, the effect of institutional prestige on h-index is described. According to the result, research products published by researchers in prestigious sociology departments are more likely to be recognized and cited by peer researchers. This result suggests that the Matthew effect evidently works in sociology. Extending this result to the global level while considering core-periphery relationship in knowledge production system, we can assume the underdevelopment of Korean sociology in the global scene can be attributed to the position of Korean sociology in hierarchical knowledge production system. We cannot enjoy cumulative advantage in the global social scientific knowledge production system.
