A study of folkloristics about multicultural festival in urban -Naadam festival for Mongolians living in Korea-

This article covers firstly about Naadam festival for Mongolians living in South of Korea, and secondly about festivals conducted in urban area, Korea which is entering into multicultural society. The study, therefore, is carried out under the theory of urban folkloristics. Studies of contemporary urban festivals have been discussed on two representative types in Korean folklore academic world. The one is for traditional ceremonies in village keeping on today, and the other is for created festivals by economic reasons of local areas, that contain tourist industry, political policies, etc. However, multicultural festivals should be dealt with a different approach from these past views of urban festivals. The first problem comes from transmitter groups standing beyond the boundary of nation, who can be sorted into a new type. So we are to discuss them under a new vision which is similar in multicultural society. The other problem comes from consideration to ethnicity of Mongolians living in Korea. Therefore, it will be valuable studies as an advance in folkloristics beyond its original concept that these problems make multicultural festivals to a new type’s festival.
