Abstract
Although Confucian teachings, compared to other teachings, in early China almost dominated debates on the concept of ‘xing’ (性) related to morality, we find little textual evidence on such debates until the Warring States period. During this Warring States period, different views on the term ‘xing’ emerged on the surface of intellectual concerns, and revolved around the debates between Mengzi and Gaozi, Xunzi’s theory of ‘xing’, discussions on xing and qing (情) in the Guodian corpus, etc. This article attempts to provide a contextual approach to the philosophical discourses on the concept of ‘xing’ in terms of intellectual history. If we extend our horizon of understanding beyond Mengzi and to other contemporary intellectuals on the issue of ‘xing,’ we can discover the intellectual context that, different from the mainstream on the issue, Mengzi particularly used the term to elaborate on his own philosophical belief. In contrast, Xunzi developed his own theory of ‘xing’ in a way that he adopted the mainstream by criticizing Mengzi.
