Abstract

“The Sorrow of a Gisaeng” is a popular novel written by Park Ru-wol and published in 1936. This novel is particularly notable for showing a distinct difference in its character narrative style from works like “The True Story of Gang Myeong-hwa” and similar pieces that previously dominated the archetype of ttakjibreon (cheap, mass-produced traditional Korean novels). Breaking away from traditional frames of realism or tragic romance novels, it constructs fictional characters, avoids being bound by the framework of poetic justice (punishing evil and rewarding good), and presents a happy ending reflecting modern values. In terms of its structural aspect, the narratives of the male and female characters together build a joint narrative, breaking away from the biographical narrative style of characters to instead construct their stories through relationships with surrounding figures. In terms of content, unlike previous works, an open and practical modern view of free love is reflected, depicting an active female image who chooses her own spouse. Furthermore, regarding the issue of chastity in male-female relationships, it presents a progressive perspective that chastity is not a one-sided female role forced by a male partner, but a value to be upheld on equal terms through mutual agreement. “The Sorrow of a Gisaeng” can be evaluated as having been utilized as a testing ground for experimenting with various modern narrative elements within limited structures, although it had limitations in vividly depicting the narrative scene by scene due to the structural constraints of publication in the ttakjibreon format at the time.
