초록

Objective: This study investigated the effect of herbal medicines on heart rate control and anticoagulant therapy in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) by reviewing randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Methods: We searched RCTs reporting the effects of herbal medicine for atrial fibrillation through domestic and international databases (Pubmed, EMBASE, CNKI, Wanfang, J-STAGE, OASIS, Science ON, and KISS). Studies that confirmed heart rate control and anticoagulant effects were selected according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were extracted from the final selected studies according to the research methodology and were analyzed using Review Manager (RevMan) 5.3. Study quality was assessed using Cochrane’s risk of bias tool. Results: Thirty-one randomized control trials were selected. One study compared the effect of herbal medicine and placebos, four studies compared the effect of herbal medicine (treatment group) and Western medicine (control group), and 26 studies compared the combined herbal medicine treatment and Western medicine (treatment group) with Western medicine (control group). The ventricular rate, frequency, and duration of AF in the treatment group were statistically significant compared to the control group (p<0.05). The prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, and fibrinogen were significant results compared to the before and after treatment (p<0.05). Adverse events were significantly lower in the treatment group than in the control group. Conclusions: The combined treatment of herbal and Western medicines may be effective in AF treatment for heart rate control and anticoagulant effects. While this study included a limited number of papers, there is a compelling and urgent necessity for larger-scale, rigorous clinical research to build upon these preliminary results.
